Interview Erina Loo

Erina Loo
Chairwoman of Malaysian Women Tourist Guides Association (MWTGA)

When asked how Erina views working with Wanita MCA on advancing rights and interests of women tourist guides, she recorded her thanks and gratitude to Wanita MCA on the issue of license renewal and room-sharing between women tourist guides and male colleagues.

“Wanita MCA contributed a lot to MWTGA. Firstly on issue of license renewal, YB Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun effectively assisted us to resolve this issue by facilitating a meeting with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism. On 26 Dec 2008, we received a letter from the Ministry of Tourism recognising us as an autonomous body.”

“Secondly, when recently appointed Minister of Tourism Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen invoked her power as the Minister that licences of errant tour operators would be revoked effective 1 June 2009 if room-sharing between women tour guides and their male colleagues were to continue. I feel that in this respect, Wanita MCA has successfully helped. I feel very fortunate as we have received a lot of support from Wanita MCA. Until now, MWTGA is very happy and satisfied with the level of commitment by Wanita MCA in collaborating with us.”

“Very effective”, she said pronouncedly on their working relationship with Wanita MCA.

She hopes that Wanita MCA will continue to provide support especially in terms of job opportunities as women tourist guides face real risk of backlash of losing their jobs as a result of the no-room share policy. In addition, she also hopes that Wanita MCA could work together with MWTGA to raise awareness of women tourist guides on their legal rights through initiatives such as public education and training programmes.
